A car traveling at 33 m/s starts to decelerate steadily. It comes to a complete stop in 6 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Given Data:

Vi (velocity initial) = 33 m/s

Vf (velocity final) = 0 m/s (complete stop)

t   =   6 s

a  = ? unknown

Solution:

The formula in computing acceleration is acceleration = (Vf - Vi) / t

acceleration = (0 m/s - 33 m/s) / 10 s

                     = -33 m/s / 6 s

                    =   - 5.5 m/s^2

The acceleration is =  - 5.5 m/s^2  (negative since the car decelerates)
